Working on small blocks of stone using tools such as files, rifflers and chisels you will learn workshop and tool safety, use of tools, stone carving and finishing, in three stages:

Practice Piece:

Using a small piece of stone you will be shown how to use a variety of tools including saws, chisels, drills and files to cut, shape and create a small sculpture which will allow you to experience all the ways of shaping the stone.

Relief Carving:

Inspired by nature, you will learn how to transfer a design onto a small block of stone, before roughing out, shaping, finishing and texturing.

Direct Carving:

After discussing ideas for your own project with the tutor, you will be using all your skills to transfer your design onto a piece of soapstone which you will then rough out, shape and finish.
